Explore Cambridge by Bike

cycling in cambridge

Cambridge has taken steps to preserve its beauty, which often means that cars aren’t made welcome in the city centre. In fact, it’s the perfect opportunity to explore Cambridge by bike for a weekend away! You might even be able to leave your car at home.

Staying at one of the hotels near Cambridge train station is a good start to embracing the biking lifestyle. Trains serve the station well, coming from places like London and Stansted Airport. No need to rent a bike immediately, as you might be tired from your journey and prefer instead to dine at one of the restaurants in the area or at the Clayton Hotel Cambridge.

The next morning, get up bright and early and walk the short distance to one of the many bicycle rental hubs in the city to start your journey. The only problem is that there’s so much to see!

For architecture buffs, take in the historical colleges around Cambridge. From the Bridge of Sighs to King’s College Chapel, Cambridge is famous for its awe-inspiring buildings and features, and the change to see some of the most famous landmarks in the UK shouldn’t be sniffed at.

Are you a TV buff? Plenty of big budget productions have used locations in Cambridge, including the Netflix hit The Crown and the Oscar-winning film The Theory of Everything. Discover the wonders of Ely Cathedral which stood in for Westminster Abbey during the episodes featuring Elizabeth and Philip’s wedding, or re-enact your favourite moments from Eddie Redmayne’s turn as Stephen Hawking. Most of this film was based on Hawking’s student life at St. John’s college, so plenty of the charmingly cobbled streets will be familiar to you.

If instead you want to breathe in Cambridge’s celebrated green spaces, take a relaxing journey to any of the parks around the city. From the Cambridge University Botanic Garden to the wilder Backs that border the River Cam, there are plenty of spaces to put your bike down and rest, or journey to with a picnic.

On your last day of a weekend trip, you might want to see what Cambridge has to offer in terms of souvenirs. To that end, ride your bike to the cobbled Market Square, which has a market seven days a week, to find something special to take back as a quirky and unusual gift. If you’d prefer to head into some shops, the independent shopping corner of Cambridge can be found around Rose Crescent and Trinity Street, Magdalene Street, and Bridge Street and King Street. There are also plenty of cafes around here for you to quench the thirst you will have built up riding on your bike all day!

Then it’s just a matter of returning your bikes, checking out of the hotel, and getting back on the train to go back to real life. But who knows? You might have loved your self-guided bike tour of Cambridge so much that you’ll make plans to come back.
